The body has an innate and powerful ability to heal itself. For example, when we cut ourselves, as long as we support the cut with the right environment to heal, ie: we keep it clean and dry, the body will heal the cut itself. The same holds true for illness and disease. The body is self-regulating and is constantly striving for homeostasis or balance. When the body loses its ability to regulate itself back into balance, this is when disease or illness sets in. The only way to truly heal the body is to support its innate ability to heal itself and give it the environment it needs to return to a state of balance.
How do we do this?
The first thing we need to do is to stimulate what’s called Vagal Tone. The Vagus Nerve is one of the most important nerves in the body. It innervates almost every major organ in the body. When we stimulate vagal tone we shift from the fight or flight stress response, to the body’s Parasympathetic State. This is the rest, digest and heal state. It is the state that the body needs to be in to truly heal itself. Two of the best ways to do this is through a regular practice of meditation (simply 10 mins a day) or a breathwork practice (10 mins a day).
The second part of supporting the body’s healing ability, is to support its vitality through ensuring proper circulation of the bloodstream, proper movement of lymphatic drainage and proper support to the energy channels sometimes called prana, chi or vis. We can do this through cardiovascular exercise, massage, dry skin brushing and rebounding, acupuncture/needling and constitutional hydrotherapy.
